Portimão beach guide

The Portuguese region of Algarve is one of the most loved destinations in Europe, from many reasons. If one is for sure the Mediterranean weather that you can enjoy once here, another one is definitely its beaches.

The best beaches around Portimão

Portimão is one of the top destinations of Portugal for beach lovers looking for a holiday abroad, thanks to its position, close to pristine beaches that alternate with more crowded ones, such as world-famous Praia da Rocha.

Let’s see going forward which are the best Portimão beaches and the ones you cannot miss for an unforgettable holiday here.

If you are planning to visit as many as Portimao beaches as possible, the Portimao Red Apartment is the right choice to sleep in the city center and have the beaches at a reasonable distance.

Praia da Rocha:

Cliffs and blue waters, and other beaches close to Portimão old town.
If you are planning a holiday in Portimão, you certainly have read tons of enthusiastic reviews of Praia da Roca holidays, already.

The reason is that Praia da Rocha is an idyllic beach, nested in a frame of steep cliffs, and with a sand so yellow that creates the perfect image with the turquoise water it fronts. Praia da Rocha is just a small drive away or walk away from Portimão city center, which makes it the perfect destination for families. Of course this means you should expect it to be very crowded during summer months.

An alternative, still quite close to Portimao old city center, is Praia do Tres Castelos, that is located slightly at west from Praia da Rocha. Not exactly suitable for families with children, it will require a careful walk due to the rocks that dot this famous beach.

Praia Grande is another beach that is right in front the old city, it is the one you will look right at, while sunbathing in from Praia da Rocha. Another crowded beach, once here you should also visit the cute town of Ferragudo. Praia Grande it is quite protected so it’s the right choice for when the wind blows hard.

Praia de Alvor and Praia dos Três Irmãos:

At West from Portimão, very close to the city.
If you’d like to explore other amazing stretches of sand not too far from Portimão, at less than 10 kilometers from the city center, you will find the city of Alvor and the beach it owns the name to. Praia de Alvor is a calm, long stretch of sand that is part of a Natural Reserve, together with Praia dos Três Irmãos, that you might try to reach with a walk, to reach a more secluded space, at least during the first hours of the day.

Going further west from Portimão, you will be able to enjoy enjoy Meia Praia, one of the most popular in Lagos, which then becomes Praia de São Roque, as well as Praia do Camilo.

Carvoeiro region of Algarve

East from Portimão.
In this area, located at East of Portimão, the beaches are slightly different from the ones close to the central part of Algarve, being more small and intimate, opposite to the long beaches of the other parts of the region.

Some examples of the beach beaches in this part of Algarve, called Carvoeiro region, are Carvoeiro Beach, the most popular among the three, Praia da Marinha and Praia de Benagil.

You will love them if you are into a less crowded atmosphere.
